Pottenstein, Germany

Pottenstein is known as "little Switzerland" and is only about one hour from Ansbach. We drove up there around lunch time and had some Radler and pizza at a beer garden. We got to enjoy what will probably be one of the last warm weekends here.

I loved this painting on one of the buildings downtown.

The entrance of town is marked by the strange rock formations.

After lunch we went down the road to the Pottenstein Luge Park. They had various different rides that you could go on for 2 euro per person and fly down the hill. It was nice to have this kind of silly fun with the deployment looming in the future.

The area has tons of walking trails and we hit an easy one that went back a small lake with paddle boat riders and lots of ducks. Trout in the water waited around by the feeders for guests to buy them a snack.
We had heard a legend that somewhere in Pottenstein was a restaurant that served steak on a stone. Along our walk we found it and decided it would be an awesome dinner - and we were right! The waiter brought out a HUGE filet on a sizzling stone. While you sit and chat your steak cooks the way you want it. The meat was perfectly seasoned and a good end to the weekend.

Lastday in Sardinia

5 July 2009

I think today is the laziest vacation day I have had since getting to Europe. Pretty much it amounts to eating and working on my tan. We spent all day next to the pool.

Observations being that Italians seem obsessed with throwing and pushing each other into the pool. That seemed to be their main activity. There was even a wedding party that took place at the hotel and by the end half the party had been pushed in the pool.
Dinner was my last chance to have my berberino wine and pizza – yes we did have the same dinner 3 nights in a row!
After dinner we took a walk to the water where the moon was reflecting beautifully off the water. Sardinia turned out to be a gorgeous place and a great way to spend the 4th of July weekend. Unfortunately tomorrow we have to go back to home, gloomy, home.

This doesn't really have to do with travel but I loved the picture. We went to a friends house for dinner and Curt cut up fruit for hours to make his fruit baskets and bowls.

The largest African festival in Europe is held in Wurzburg Germany this weekend and of course we have to get there. The place is crazy crowded full of all kinds of people. There were food stands, stalls with all sorts of goodies for sale, and lots of bands. We got a cool light and some falafels before we called it a day.

Polish Pottery....for serious shoppers only!

16 May 2009

rain 55 °F

Polish Pottery tours here are for serious and dedicated shoppers only! One of our friends found a tour thru the Grafenwohr MWR so at 9:30 on Friday night we left our house and drove to meet the bus. After loading pillows, blankets and snacks we fell asleep and the bus driver took us into Poland. By 5:00 am on Saturday we were at our first store.

The selection is amazing and its hard to figure out what to buy and what not. That's why I wore this expression a lot. They have everything from cups for dipping sauce to a huge turkey roaster for thansgiving. Prices are cheap and the stores take Euro, dollar, polish money and credit cards. The stores have boxes and wrap your stuff right there. All you have to do is write your name on the box and throw in the storage area below the bus.

Curt and I seemed to get a lot in this pattern but we didn't stick solely to this.
For lunch at 1130 we headed to a Polish restaurant. The outside had Hitler carved into the wall because it used to be one of his summer or resting places.

It had great food. Curt and I shared some perogies and a chicken filet breaded with eggs and corn flakes.
Even though we hardly slept the night before and just ate we all headed to another shop and had one last effort to find that perfect pottery before heading back to Germany. The day was a blast and our kitchen cabinets are now filled with polish pottery.
