Croatia via Munich

A quick stop in Munich en route to Dubrovnik

sunny

So we set off on our trip thru Croatia and Slovenia with a few hour start in Munich. We had a Bayern train ticket to travel to munich which is actually for up to 4 adults to travel anywhere in Bavaria for 27 euro all day. We got to Munich without mishap and stored our bags in the lockers at the Hauptbahnhof ( 6 euro). Next stop was the TI right outside the train station. We got a map and a visit munich book which will be good for future trips.DSC00798.jpg
Anyway we moved on down Neuhauser street toward the Marienplatz. Munich is very busy and it felt as if we were fighting the crowds the whole way. The path to the main square is lined with expensive stores, mostly with clothing. We spotted Restaurant St. Augustiner-Brau and found a table outside. DSC00775.jpg
We both ordered off the kinder menu – hot dogs and pommes with Radler. This was nothing to right home about but we got an apfelstrudel before we left. It was nice to people watch while we ate. DSC00808.jpg
We had a total of about 4 hours in Munich so we continued down the street toward the Marienplatz and the market with foods and crafts. We headed back thru the marienplatz just as the glockenspiel was doing its tune. After listening we headed back thru some shops to the train station. We realized Munich is not a real great place to shop because everything seems very expensive – i.e. 99 euro for a pair of boots, 9 euro for a swim cap, 200 euro for a pair of tennis shoes – this would be about $150, $13, and $300 respectively.
Back at the train station we head for our bag lockers only to find that the key to my locker doesn’t work. Curt finds a sign with a number to call for help and in short order a man is there with a master key to open my locker – the drama was over very quickly but luckily we had left enough time to get to the airport. Our 40 minute subway/urban train ride to the airport in Munich (40 minutes) was included in the bayern ticket we bought for the train.
We wondered around the airport and looked for some food but didn’t seen anything appealing so just ate some snacks. We got a soda at one of the shops for 1.95 euro but if you brought back the bottle you got 0.25 euro back! Weird – but we did it. The flight was a bit over an hour and then we were dumped out in Dubrovnik to retrieve our bags, get some kuna out of the ATM and find the bus that was to take us to the Old Town. Atlas bus service meets every airplane to take passengers to the Pile Gate just outside the Old Town (70 kuna for the two of us.)
We were to call the owner of our Soba but our german phones wouldn’t work so we were a little nervous on the bus ride 13 miles from the airport. However we didn’t need to be because even though it was 2300 the daughter of the owner was at the bus stop to get us. She led us down the shiny streets of the stradun to our apartment. The bathroom was down some stairs and our bedroom with a sink upstairs. The owner lived right next to us. The room had a nice comfy bed and air conditioning! We were charged 94 euro for 2 nights here! We had been exhausted but the excitement of arriving without incident gave us some renewed energy. We walked down the stradun and got….gelato, of course. I got tiramisu and curt had strawberry (14 kuna – about $3).
