Day 2 Mti Mkubwa to Shira Camp

30 January 2014

sunny 80 °F

Gruel (porridge), eggs, and sausage for breakfast to fuel our hiking start at 0815. We spent one hour going through the rain forest and then on to the Heath and moorland zone. The route started to get VERY dusty and was pretty steep with a lot of up and down. The hike was about 5 hours to the Shira 1 camp. We got our first views of the peak. Once we reached camp today we were done hiking and able to enjoy the lunch of macaroni noodles with peppers and carrots, chicken soup and chicken tenders. The rest of the day was used to rest and play cards. Absolutely everything we have is now dirty due to the dust so there is nothing to do about it. Dinner was pumpkin soup, rice with beef and broth and banana fritters. I have a headache but I think it is from carrying the bags and my neck, not mountain sickness. Camp today at 11,500 feet
