Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

4-5 October 2015

sunny

There is nothing more pleasing than stealing an extra day or two of vacation. I got off an overnight shift this morning, slept for a couple hours and then started our drive to Albuquerque. This week is the balloon fiesta there but halfway between El Paso and Albuquerque is Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, the title of a popular NBC Radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs citizens voted and won. We parked at RJ RV park and I loved this sign at the office.

Los Arcos Steakhouse there advertises that they have the best steaks in the US. I had a good steak covered with cheese and crab meat but I'm not sold on the best in the world thing.

We stole an hour on Monday morning to sit in the hot springs before driving the rest of the way to Albuquerque. Our chosen spring was Riverbend hot springs mostly for the private pools. I rented an hour in the Rio pool for $30. Rio (“river”) is extremely close to the river, with great views and a quiet flow of water. This cozy pool seats two people very comfortably and has a temperature of about 107-108 degrees. It has a small shaded deck for cooling off which they recommend you do every 15 minutes.
