Quick stop in Natchez, Mississippi

May 2013

sunny

The intent was to be walking on the beach in Puerto Rico right now but unfortunately Curt was in a motorcycle accident and those plans were shattered. Luckily he was relatively okay after a week in the hospital, 2 chest tubes and lots of pain medications. I spent about 7 or 8 days going back and forth from home to take care of the dogs and the hospital to take care of Curt. I did some watching over these little guys that were nested just above our front door!

So because this is the only leave I will get from GTMO we tried to squeeze out a few nights in Natchez, Mississippi. When they heard about the trip the girls decided to get some rest.

We figured we could do a lot of resting at our favorite B&B, the Deveraux Shields house, and they also allowed pets. So for a few nights we had rest, food, drinks and short walks with the girls!

Cuban wildlife

8 May 2013

sunny 85 °F

Tonight I was on the way to a scuba dive and saw almost every brand of wildlife Guantanamo Bay has to offer.

I heard a rumor of the small deer on the island but only seen them once or twice and then without a camera. This time I caught one out in the open. They are very small deer and one of the rumors is that one of the initial inhabitants of the island looked to hunt so he had deer brought here and released. No one is hunting them now :)

I had been trying to figure out how to get a photo of the banana rats who spend most of their time roaming around at night. We see them at the outdoor movie theater but at that point we aren't generally thinking about taking photos. Today this one was out early and didn't seem to mind when I came close for a photo. They are not named for their dietary preference, but because their feces look like small versions of the fruit. They are also called Desmarest's hutias.

Last but not least of course is Iggy. You are never far from an iguana here in GTMO!

I didn't have my camera for the dive but we saw a few grouper and I saw two gray spotted eels.

Bay Swim

4 May 2013

sunny 85 °F

The Bay Swim is sort of like a legend around here. I had heard about it being scheduled, then canceled and delayed due to weather ever since I got here four months ago. But today was the lucky day, the weather gave us perfectly calm seas with barely a current.

About 40 swimmers met at girl scout beach, got on pontoon boats and were taken to the Leeward side of the island. Between the two sides there is 1.7 miles of bay that we now had to conquer. Swimmers fought a gauntlet of stinging plants, beas and hydra but everyone made it! Some will have proof of the event in the form of rashes and bites for several days afterward.

About 25% of the participants were in the medical field! We look pretty good for what we just went through I think!
