Curt and I seem to have bad luck following us on this trip so it was no surprise to wake up to a cloudy day. We hit the day with optimism and went for a hike Makapu’u trail. There is a lighthouse and a lookout but the top was closed. We still got some good photos and now we can lay on the beach with a little less guilt.

We hit up a couple spots like the blow hole and the China wall, catching a glimpse of a few surfers before going to Kona Brewing Company for lunch. Curt and I split a Cuban sandwich and a shrimp melt that I would definitely go back for. I had a strawberry dreamsicle drink that was also to die for.

The afternoon was spent a Sandy Beach where Curt and Chris went swimming in the huge waves and Lindsay and I tried not to panic. At one point Curt was stumbling around, confused and thankfully got out of the water.

For dinner we met up with two of their friends, Shawn and Brian at Whole Foods. The happy hour special was a slice of pizza and beer for $5. We had a blast hanging out on the patio and hearing about the physical therapist that Chris goes to.

Finally we arrive in Oahu

23 July 2015

sunny

Thanks again due to American Airlines we are up at 0220 to make our 0500 flight. After a lot of confusion over our unfinished reservation for the new flight we were checked in. Our trip to Dallas was quick but on our eight hour flight to Oaha we were rewarded by sitting in the day care section. For seven hours a three year old kicked the back of our seats. When Curt finally said something to the father the man went off on a tirade about how it was hard to raise five kids with his wife deployed most of the time. We informed us he had done 20 years in the military and we were left wondering what that had to do with us enduring his child kicking us in the back for seven hours.

At last we arrived and Lindsay and Chris had lei’s to give us!! So pretty. We made some quick sandwiches at their house and hit the beach to unwind. Weimanelo Beach was just what we needed, some sun, small waves and watching Calla play in the sand.

Thanks to American Airlines we aren’t on our way to Hawaii like we are supposed to be today. As Curt was checking us in for our flight at 2030 last night he got the response that our flight was cancelled. After going through numerous supervisors with both American Airlines and Travelocity we learned our flight was cancelled for “routine maintenance” and we were “reaccomidated” on a flight for 22 July leaving at 0500 AM!!! Our options were to get a full refund or leave on our new flight, no upgrades, no compensation!
We figured the best thing to take our minds off that horrible airline was to eat brunch at Village Inn and go for a ride

UFO Festival in Roswell, New Mexico

Roswell, New Mexico hosts a UFO festival every year in July and we were lucky enough to participate this year. Roswell is a relatively small town that capitalizes on an alleged UFO landing years ago. Now the entire town is dressed up in the alien them from the street lights to the restaurants.

The main strip had a little street fair with all sorts of alien merchanidise, bands, food and even a bicycle zoo. All this takes place right outside the capital building that also happens to be in green. We hit up a restaurant right by the town called Peppers for dinner just before the light parade.

Our camp chairs were parked on the curb in front of Sonic for atleast an hour before the parade as it was advertised as one of the best events of the festival. Unfortunately this did no come to fruition. The parade was actually only about 4 minutes long and a disappointment to many.

Satrday morning the town did a bit better with the Alien Chase 5K that was through a lot of parks. People had their chance to dress up as aliens and several took the opportunity.

Inside the convention center they were screening a documetary on he true story of Travis Walton. He was allegedly abducted by aliens and was available in person or questioning afterwards. The movie Fire in the Sky is a Hollywood production of his story as well.

All weekend long at the convention center and UFO museum various speakers talke on all topics alien. We went to another talk by Stanton Friedman on the Real Majestic 12 with a packed audience but I just couldn't hold my attention to that and we left early.

The Elks in Roswell was offering a free BBQ dinner to all veterans and it seems crazy to pass up free food. We met an interesting couple from Albuquerque and watched the fireworks with them.
The fireworks show was one of the best I have seen. Not only was the main show quite long but the view of the surrounding area was extensive For the entire hour prior all around us the town was setting off personal fireworks, it felt like a 3D show.
Our last day was just a bit of shopping and lunch at the Pasta Cafe before driving home. I got lobster ravioli that I am pretty sure they made by hand. Delicious and a great little getaway.

Marfa, Texas

1-3 June 2015

sunny

Ah, my surgery ICU month is over and I have a few days off to go somewhere in our new RV. I had heard a few years ago about this small town in West Texas that is famous for these myterious little lights that come on at dusk on the horizon. We carefully made it through El Paso with the RV in tow and didn't have any mishaps until we went about 200 feet past the entrance of the Tumble In RV park. Unfortuntely you can't just make a U-turn with a huge RV behind you and there isn't much out there to see so we had to go 9 miles before we could turn around.

Later the first night we went to this observatory about 9 miles from the RV park to see these Marfa lights. According to research they have been seen on most clear nights since 1883. There has been much speculation about the origin but no one has ever figured it out. The lights look like distant house lights that come on and off in different spots along the horizon. Kinda neat to see but not sure its worth coming to Marfa for.

The main thing we learned is not to come during the week because almost all restaurants in the town are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We found a place called Capri that had three things on the menu but atleast a cute little beer garden to eat it in.

Marfa was kind of dead so we drove 25 miles to Alpine, Texas which seems to have much more going on. Sadly it started to rain so we got our Raspa from Murphy's Raspa company and headed back to Marfa. Alpine has really beautiful murals everywhere and slushies that they have renamed, Raspa.

On the way out of town I had to stop and take a photo of the Prada store front. Marfa is known as being a town full of artists and one of them built this Prada store in the midde of the desert as a joke.

Jerome and Sedona, Arizona

19 April 2015

sunny

Our last real day in Arizona and it was another action packed day of hiking and eating :) We started off with a fabulous breakfast at the Mile Hile Cafe in Jerome. I had cheesy hash and Curt had eggs benedict with mimosas! Jerome is an adorable, supposedly haunted town on a hile that has cute shops and great views and was definately worth the stop.

Next up was hiking to the Arch which was probably the greatest photographic moment of the trip. Other hikers were very polite in waiting on each other so photos could be taken without large crowds in the background.

The Grand Canyon at last!

18 April 2015

sunny

I have been feeling bad that our list of things we have seen in the world did not include one of the United States biggest attractions, the Grand Canyon. Fortunately for us our friends Chris and Christina live only a couple hours away and were willing to show us the sites. We even got an added bonus to the day with a stop at Bearizona in Willams, Arizona. The park has a drive through area with bear, bison and wolves but also a walk around area with lots of other animals. There were three baby bears that I couldn't take pictures of but were adorable and playful. We had a hard time walking away from their little den.

We tore ourselves away from the baby bears in the interest of getting a hike in at the Grand Canyon. We settled on doing a portion of the Bright Angel Trail which is one of the most popular. As luck would have it the weekend was free entry so it was quite crowded. Because we arrived in the afternoon we didn't get to hike the entire trail but I felt fortunate to have seen this wonder and plan to return.

The pizza place right outside the park called our names so we gave in but while there noticed we had buy one get one free coupons for the National Geographic IMAX Movie about the history of the park. It turned out to be less than stellar but ya win some, ya lose some.

Our final stop for the day was back in Williams at Poncho Magilacutties for Mexican. They had wine called the The Traveler and also t-shirts with the logo that Christina and I had to have! What a great day!

Prescott, Arizona

17 April 2015

sunny

I am so happy for this getaway to Prescott, Arizona to visit my friend from Cuba, Christina and her husband Chris. They had an absolutely amazing and action pack weekend planned for us starting with brunch in Prescott at the Lone Star Cafe. This is an adorable restaurant in the downtown with lots of fun to read wall art.
